Fascinating approach to colonialism, via landscape and environment. Would be interesting to compare with the Australian or African experience. Naming is another significant way in which the colonisers obliterated much indigenous culture - e.g. bestowing bland or obsequious names honouring figureheads at home, while deliberately deleting the loaded indigenous term, wit its tacit prior claim. The way this played out in Ireland, for instance, was brilliantly exposed in Brian Friel's play 'Translations'. A study of the neutralising of Aboriginal place names would be revealing - both pre and post-European.

do you consider the ghost twitters that many politicians and celebrities hire to be 'fakers'? Or do they suggest that the idea of faking maintains the illusion that there is a real singular politician somewhere?

I used to think that knowing the identity behind the fake wouldn't matter, but as soon as I found out who was behind Fake Conroy I started to see Leslie Nassar's face in my mind while reading his tweets. Ruined it a bit. But maybe that was just the insane media coverage of his unmasking.

I'd be interested in a politician running a fake Twitter account of themselves. Plausible deniability?

Or from beyond the grave.

"Is that Joh, fake?"

"Don'y you worry about that."

Thanks Scott - it's something I worry about in the research actually - pulling back the curtain. Although I tend to think the "fake" in everyone's name tends to do that as well.
